Metropolitan Exchange

Gosh! I wish I could take you to all these fascinating studios where I meet some of the most incredibly inspired and creative individuals. I had a feeling Piero Gandini, owner of the incredibly successful Flos lighting company, should meet Jamie Zigelbaum. We headed to the Metrolpolitan Exchange building in Brooklyn where Jamie works in a shared office/studio space. The building is filled with insanely nerdy people making all sorts of stuff. Physicists, biologists, biochemists, artists, computer programmers . . . basically a giant nerd fest happens on a daily basis in this building and Jamie is smack bang in the middle of it.

Of course, Jamie being king of nerds, ex MIT Media LAB graduate, this environment suits him perfectly. His passion is interaction design and he's basically challenged by the fact that so much of the technology we use on a daily basis is not really inspired by or designed to fit with our body or the way we interact with one another. Why is a computer the shape it is? Why is it so flat, hard, and angular? Jamie took Piero and I through some of his projects and we couldn't stop smiling in awe of what Jamie's been up to. We'll be doing some sort of special collabroation with him soon. The thing that strikes me every time about Jamie is that he's both so smart and so human. A hard balance to achieve for the nerds. He's just too good to be true.
