Masseria Leccese

This is Masseria Leccese, contrada Settarte, near Ostuni, the summer home or summer camp of Pasquale, an art dealer friend of mine.

In Puglia, the typical architectural structures are Trulli; amazing, small dry-stone huts with hat-like conical roofs.

These Trulli were built in the 19th century and are a delight to inhabit. Their thick stone walls keep the heat out and their small windows, whose size and position is determined by the construction of the thick walls, are perfectly positioned to let in both light and air.

Similar to the chimney-like Nuraghe structures of Sardinia, and the Dammuso of the Island of Pantelleria which are constructed from courser stones such as lava stones, Trulli are made from Limestone and appear to have a more refined surface and tighter arrangement.

In fact, when built correctly, not even a lizard would be able to pass between the rocks!
