About This Piece

Vintage Design

It is one of the icons of Italian design. It is exhibited in the most important museums in the world among which: Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum. Sapper won the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 with this project. Despite being designed in the 1970s, Tizio is still considered a symbol of quality, functionality and elegance of "Made in Italy". The result of a friendship that has become a professional collaboration between Sapper and Gismondi, it was born from the latter's desire to design a drawing lamp that had a wide range of movement, and that, despite this characteristic, was not bulky. The lamp is produced in metal finished with a very light coating of nylon reinforced with fiberglass and consists of two pairs of parallel arms that allow a wide range of positions. The stability of these positions is determined by steel counterweights fixed to the ends of the pairs of arms. As far as the lighting is concerned, Tizio is equipped with a 12 Volt halogen lamp, powered by a direct current passing through the metal arms. This voltage creates no danger of electrocution in the event of contact with the arms.

About the Creator

Richard Sapper

German-born, Italian-based industrial designer Richard Sapper (1932-2015) is internationally celebrated for his unique sensibility, which is considered to be a blend of Teutonic rationality and Mediterranean style.

Sapper’s education was diverse—he studied philosophy, anatomy, and engineering, but graduated with a degree in business from the University of Munich. Upon completion, Sapper worked in the styling department of Daimler Benz in Stuttgart, before relocating to Milan in 1958. There he worked for a time in the office of Italian design master Gio Ponti (1891-1979). He opened his own design studio in 1959 and quickly earned a reputation for reinventing existing technology for new consumer products. He won his first Compasso d’Oro in 1960 for his Static Table Clock for Lorenz, which was repurposed from war-surplus torpedo timers.

Between 1957 and 1977, Sapper began a long collaboration with Italian architect-designer Marco Zanuso (1916-2001). The pair started out working as design consultants for the Italian electronics manufacturer Brionvega. Over the years, they took on projects for many other brands, and, along the way, pioneered a new postwar aesthetic known as techno-functionalism. Successful designs by the pair include Lambda Chair for Gavina (1959), Doney 14 TV for Brionvega (1962)—the first fully-transistor television—the Grillo Telephone for Siemens (1966), and a series of houses for the landmark Italy: The New Domestic Landscape exhibition in New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1972.

Among Sapper's best known solo designs are the Tizio Desk Lamp for Artemide (1972)—one of the best-selling lamps of the 20th century—and the 9091 Kettle for Alessi (1983). Through the course of his career, Sapper produced successful and innovative designs for many well-known Italian and international brands, including B&B Italia, FIAT, Heuer, Kartell, Knoll, Magis, Molteni, Pirelli, and many others. In the 1980s, Sapper became the chief industrial design consultant for IBM and Lenovo, creating the very first design for the ThinkPad laptop (1992).

Sapper has won many awards and accolades, including multiple Compasso d’Oro awards (1960, 1962, 1964, 1967, 1979, 1987, 1991, 1994, and 1998), the Lucky Strike Award from the Raymond Loewy Foundation (1992), and the Federal Republic of Germany Grand Merit Cross (2012). Sapper’s work has been featured in many museum exhibitions and permanent collections around the world, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper Hewitt Museum, and Brooklyn Museum; and London's Design Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum.

Sapper passed away at the age of 83 in 2015.

About the Maker

Artemide

Legendary Italian lighting manufacturer Artemide was founded in the Milan area in 1959 by engineer-designer Ernesto Gismondi (born in San Remo, 1931) and designer Sergio Mazza (born in Milan, 1931). Notably, the latter designed the company’s first successful product, the Alfa Lamp, a year prior to Artemide’s launch. Both founders went on to contribute designs to Artemide’s ever-evolving lines over the next several decades, alongside spearheading the company’s mission to develop distinctive, architecturally-driven lamps, pendants, and other fixtures in collaboration with major design talents from around the world.

Highlights from Artemide’s vast catalogue include Italian designer Vico Magistretti’s space-age Eclisse Lamp (1967) and German-Italian designer Richard Sapper’s minimal, halogen-lit Tizio Desk Lamp (1972), which has become one of the most popular workspace accessories ever produced. The 1980s saw the launch of the Tolomeo Lamp (1987), designed by Italians Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina, which quickly became an international symbol of the “Made in Italy” style that dominated design tastes at the end of the last century. Today, Artemide continues to commission high-tech, high-concept works—increasingly with a focus on sustainability—from notable international designers, such as Herzog & De Meuron, Naoto Fukasawa, Karim Rashid, and Zaha Hadid, among others. Through the decades, many of Artemide’s lighting designs have been awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro, with the company itself receiving a “Career Achievement” award in 1995

For more than 50 years, Artemide’s approach has set the pace for design innovation with well-researched products that often end up in the pages of design history books. Numerous pieces have been acquisitioned into museum collections around the world, from New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnica in Milan, Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
