Empoli, as a commune itself, is located approximately 30 km (45 minutes) slightly southwest of Florence, in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is the somewhat forgotten region of the country when it comes to glass production, behind the well-known Murano or Venetian glass.

Glass production in the Empoli region of Italy actually has a history dating back to the 1500s, when local glass production was known as 'verde' (Italian for green). The traditional verde glass was made at that time for a number of functional and decorative pieces.
