About This Piece

Vintage Design

Elegant French Mid-Century Modern travertine and chrome table lamp by Philippe Barbier for Maison Barbier, Paris, circa 1960s–1970s — understated 1970s Parisian modernism at its most refined. Can be fitted with US or international plug of your choice. This lamp has the original European B22 bayonet socket. B22 LED bulbs are available online in the US.

The base composition is characteristically Barbier: a solid cylindrical travertine column supporting a travertine sphere, the two elements joined and articulated by polished chrome-steel fittings — a slender turned goblet form between the sphere and neck, and a crisp chrome collar at the junction of column and sphere. The travertine is warm beige-cream throughout, showing the natural voids, pitting, and linear veining that are the hallmark of the material. Against the bright, mirror-polished chrome, the effect is of raw natural material held in precise architectural tension — earthy warmth and industrial precision in equal measure.

The sphere-and-column configuration is one of Barbier's most recognizable forms, placing this piece firmly within his documented body of work, though no maker's mark is visible on the base.
