Vintage Design

Monumental handwoven vintage wool flatweave rug (556 × 204 cm / 18'3" × 6'8") from the Romanian folk weaving tradition — rich folk floral composition on a dramatic deep dark ground, with vivid teal, fuchsia, green, purple, and cream accents. Fringed ends. At over 18 feet long and nearly 7 feet wide, this is one of the largest Romanian folk scoarțe in existence — a truly museum-quality piece of exceptional rarity.
This piece was passed down as a wedding dowry (zestre) in a family from Maramureș, Romania — one of the last living repositories of authentic Romanian folk textile tradition. Maramureș is internationally recognized as one of Europe's most intact traditional rural cultures, and textiles from this region with documented provenance carry exceptional cultural and collector value. The "zestre" tradition — passing down handwoven textiles as part of a bride's dowry — is one of the oldest and most revered folk customs in Romanian culture.
Romanian hand-woven rugs were included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2016, recognized as an expression of creativity, identity, and social cohesion passed down through generations of skilled weavers. Each piece in our collection is a genuine artifact of this living tradition, personally curated over 20 years of collecting in Moldova and Maramureș, Romania.
Technique: handwoven on a traditional loom, 100% wool, natural/vegetable dyes. Tapestry / flatweave scoarță-style construction. Fringed ends. Condition: very good vintage. Structurally sound with minor age-appropriate signs. Light storage folds/creases — will relax when laid flat.
