About This Piece

Vintage Design

Console model Ara with a wooden structure and a glass top designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli and manufactured by Driade in 1974. Licterature: G. Gramigna, Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000, p. 225, Allemandi, 2003. On January 10, 1931, Massimo Vignelli was born in Milan, Italy. He attended an art school, Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, before earning an Architecture degree from the Politecnico di Milano, 1953. During the period between 1953 and 1957, he attended the School of Architecture and University of Venice. Early in his professional career, his chief area of expertise was graphic designing for products and corporate identity creation. Also Vignelli tweaked a design for the ‘Fungo’ table lamp by creating a series of lighting fixtures. In the late 1950s, he earned a fellowship to study in United States at Towle Silversmiths, Massachusetts and the Institute of Design, Chicago. In 1957, he married Lella Vignelli, whom he met at an architecture convention. A few years later they established their small design studio, the Lella and Massimo Vignelli Office of Design and Architecture, Milan. The studio dealt with designing domestic products, office accessories, graphics and furniture. In 1965, the Vignellis moved to Chicago, US, where they founded Unimark International which specifically focused on corporate graphic designing. It was Vignellis’s innovative idea of introducing the Helvetica typography in visual communication that went viral all over United States. They employed the rudimentary geometric shapes such as cube, pyramid, spheres and cylinders in a variety of product designs. These designs appeared balanced, appealing and functional. According to the founder of the firm, the designer should be able to design everything from a needle to a whole metropolis. A wide-range of deigning programs was introduced in the company from environmental planning to tableware and packaging showcasing versatile and novel ideas. In 1966, Vignelli expanded his business and launched a branch of Unimark International in New York. Soon it became the largest firm in the world for its expansion into an array of domains and covering variety of lifestyles. The firm takes pride in establishing some of the notable and prestigious corporate identities, including that of American Airlines. Vignelli designed the signage for New York City Subway system and the DC Metro. In 1971, he resigned from the company as it got sidetracked from the vision he created and single-mindedly focused on product marketing rather than the design itself. Subsequently, Vignelli and Lella founded another firm, Vignelli Associates. Once again his firm attracted high-profile clients seeking corporate identity assistance. These top-notch corporations included Knoll, Bloomingdale’s and IBM. In addition to art direction, Vignelli also penned a book, titled Vignelli: from A to Z. The book details Vignelli’s ideas and vision with regard to graphic designing in the form of essays. The essays are organized in an alphabetical order as hinted in the title. In fact, they are based on somewhat the same course Vignelli gave lectures on while teaching at Harvard’s School of Design and Architecture. In 2009, Vignelli launched a free e-book, The Vignelli Canon, with the aim of passing on his legacy and treasure of knowledge on designing to young designers. Massimo Vignelli died on May 27, 2014.

About the Maker

Driade

Italian furniture manufacturer Driade was founded in 1968 by designers Enrico Astori, Antonia Astori, and Adelaide Acerbi. The company was built on three important principles: project planning, execution and advertising. Enrico established himself as art director, while Antonia was the designer and architect, and Adelaide was in charge of the brand’s image and communication. Their ultimate goal was to introduce experimentation into mass-produced products. Driade's early successes came through collaborations with cutting-edge Italian designers like De Pas, D’Urbino & Lomazzi, Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, and Lella and Massimo Vignelli. As the company grew, the roster of designers expanded internationally.

During the 1980s, Driade hired prolific French designer Philippe Starck, who designed many iconic pieces and influenced the company's general aesthetic. Iconic Driade designs by Starck include Miss Dorn Chair (1980), the three-legged Costes Armchair (1984), J. Série Lang Chair (1986), Lola Mundo Chair (1988), and Vicieuse Coffee Table (1992), to name a few.

In 1983, Driade published its first furniture manual, which was sold at news-stands. In 1988, the company moved its headquarters to a new building designed by Antonia in Fossadello, near Piacenza. In the mid-1990s, the DriadeStore collection was introduced as a collection of items for everyday living targeted at a younger demographic.

Since the beginning, Driade aimed to work with designers who were able to anticipate new lines of research and trends in order to design unique products for the home, gardens, and public spaces.  Over the course of the company’s history, Driade has collaborated with a wealth of high-profile designers, such as Atelier Oï, Ron Arad, Claudio Bellini, Iluis Clotet, Toyo Ito, Fabrio Novembre, Bořek Šípek, George Sowden, Oscar Tusquets, and Marco Zanuso Jr., among others. Notable designs include Antonia Astori’s Oikos (1972); Enzo Mari’s Delfina Chair (1979, winner of Compasso d’Oro); Alessandro Mendini’s Sabrina Sofa (1982); Bořek Šípek’s Jansky Chair (1986); Enzo Mari’s LegatoTable (2001, winner of Compasso d’Oro); Dong’s Adelaide Tableware (2008); Arad’s MT3 Rocking Chair (2008, winner of Compasso d’Oro); and Novembre’s Nemo Chair (2010).

In 2013, Driade was purchased by Italian Creation Group, an Italian industrial holding company. In 2014, architect David Chipperfield was appointed the new Art Director. In 2016, Chipperfield introduced the Driade Living Room 2016. Designers for the collection include Philippe Starck, Konstantin Grcic, Naoto Fukasawa, Lievore Altherr Molina, Fredrikson Stallard, and Ludovica+Roberto Palomba.
