Charles House is founded in 1908, when Ernest Charles takes over the Ullmann bronze works. The company, then located at 103 Rue de Turenne in Paris, has earned a reputation in the professional bronze art Community for its reproductions of ancient lamps. In 1920, Emile Albert Charles, his elder son, takes over the company. In the 1960s, he is joined by his two sons: Jean Charles, first in his class at Ecole Boulle in the interior design and wood sculpture department, and Jacques Charles, a graduate of Arts Appliqués in interior design. They develop the "Charles Style", a blend of classicism, precision, and contemporary touches that represents a new approach to lighting and decor. Their work includes a number of famous lamps: Ananas, Épi de mais, Pomme de Pin, Lotus, Vase Médicis, etc. In 1965, the stainless steel and lacquer line is created. The organ pipe lamps are wildly popular, becoming synonymous with the aesthetics of the period. In the 1970s, Chrystiane Charles, Jean's wife and a Beaux Arts gold medalist sculptor, becomes Artistic Director at Charles and creates her eponymous collection. She offers a collection of signed and numbered sculptural lamps, contemporary in expression and inspired by nature: Amaryllis, Alizée, Orchidée, Tulipes, etc. The Charles company still exist today and collaborate with famous designers all around the world.
