Danish CH23 Beech Teak Dining Chairs by Hans Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn, 1950s, Set of 8

A stunning, first generation, run of eight Danish Modern dining chairs in beech with contrasting teak backrests. The model CH-23 was designed in 1950 by Hans Wegner exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, Denmark. The frames are constructed of solid beech, the backrest is curved and made of pale beech sandwiched between two teak plies; the backrest joints hidden by contrasting teak cruciform inlays.
The chairs are in wonderful condition for their age, and have been sympathetically cleaned and oiled, with newly woven Danish paper cord seats.
Underneath four of the chairs there is evidence of a period repair to the mortise and tenon joint (see last image), which has now been rectified, and as a result all eight chairs are structurally solid.
Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner created almost 500 chairs in his lifetime – many of them considered masterpieces.
These CH23 chairs dating from the 1950s were designed early in his career, and were partly responsible for launching him and the style we now know as ‘Danish Modern’ on to the international stage.
