About This Piece

Vintage Design

This is Shozan Shido's most famous kokeshi. It is a tribute to one of Japan's most famous dancers. It is titled 'Osono the Dancer.' This kokeshi has such elegance.

Shido Shozan was born in 1932. He was originally a traditional Yamagata artisan. He later moved to Yonezawa, which greatly influenced some of his designs to represent Yonezawa motifs. His later work also often uses natural wood grain to bring out delicate and beautiful designs. Shido has won numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister's Award. His kokeshi are among the most popular and sought after by collectors worldwide which makes them expensive. Shido-San died in 1995.
