About This Piece

Image dimensions: 34.2 x 45.5 cm. Sleeping Diana is an original print, realized in 1898. Black and white xylograph on applied Japon paper. Good conditions except for yellowing of paper (especially along the margins), and very light folds on lower left side. The print was realized by Johann Jacob Weber and it's part of the series Meisterwerke der Holzschneidekunst (original title: SECHZEHN HOLZSCHNITTE NACH GEMÄLDEN ARNOLD BÖCKLIN (MEISTERWERKE DER HOLZSCHNEIDEKUNST, NEUE FOLGE HEFT V) printed in 1898 and dedicated to Arnold Böcklin. The series containing xylographs that represent some of the most famous paintings of Arnold Böcklin. Printed by J.J. Weber, Leipzig. Original title of artwork: Schlafende Diana. The title is printed on lower right corner. This black and white xylograph represents Diana goddess of hunting, lying asleep on a rock covered with moss green. Two goat divinities face each other, longing to contemplate the white and sensual body of the young hunter who appears languid and unaware, like a biblical Susanna. The two grotesque fauns, which sprout against a stormy sky, contrast with the delicacy of the white girl. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price.
