The impressive wooden sculpture, measuring more than 13 meters all together (42.65 feet) long, was made in the 1980s and an extension in the 90s by the East German artist Guenther Thuere. The sculpture shows the silhouette of the most famous and important buildings and churches in Berlin (Berlin Cathedral, Berlin Red Town Hall, etc.), with the artist paying particular attention to the city's gates (Brandenburg Gate, Hamburg Gate, Oranienburg Gate, etc.) . The work of art originally decorated the Berlin restaurant “Zum alten Tor” on Torstrasse (Berlin Mitte-Prenzlauer Berg) for 30 years. There it sat, backlit and visible in several rooms, about 2 m high on simple wall boards. The solid woodwork consists of 4 exhibits, each consisting of 3 pieces. Each of the 4 exhibits measures an impressive 3 to 3.5 meters (9.8 to 11.5 feet) and can be installed independently of the other exhibits. You can equip several rooms with it or present it as a complete work of art in a single room. What is remarkable is that G. Thüre managed to set accents with playful ease through the arrangement of wood grain and saw cut, so that an overall lovingly impressive, minimalist work was created, which also fits perfectly into today's times.
