A set of Alfred Hendrickx S6L chairs, that has become difficult to find here in Belgium. It was first presented with other Belform furniture in 1958 at the world expo in Brussels. The design and construction of this chair is thoughtful made. The frame consists of 4 connected parts that come smoothly together. It must have taken a lot of precision and expert craftsmanship to build these chairs at the time they were made. When you look at this chair the armrests are very present and slightly carved outwards on both sides which gives the chair an elegant look. A. Hendrickx stood out with his collection of Belgian furniture design, and delivered for Belform many beautiful designs that went into production from the early fifties until the early 70s. He made designs that challenged Belgian design in form, material and production. I always appreciated the work of Alfred Hendrickx and through the years I noticed more people do this as well. I’m always very pleased to find furniture from Alfred Hendrickx and to be more precise, collectors know that the S6-L is very difficult to find, especially with the lower back, and as a pair they come up occasionally on the market. This pair of low backrest chairs are reupholstered in a deep, bright red fabric and are refurbished with a new foam. Together with Sophie of Cover and Couch we looked for a fabric that kept close to the original one, so the chairs kept their original value. Both chairs stand in a very good and clean condition, a beautiful patina has gained through the years. ⁣

Alfred Hendrickx

Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx was born in 1931. While information is limited, it is known that Hendrickx collaborated with Belgian furniture manufacturer Belform throughout the midcentury, designing elegant, sculptural pieces, including tables , seating ,storage solutions , and sideboards . His 1950s and ‘60s-era pieces have been recently rediscovered on the vintage market, sought after for their more “industrial-style” take on the midcentury Scandinavian look, using both fine woods like rosewood and teak and less luxurious materials like laminates and steel.

Belform

Little to no verifiable information is available on the Belgian furniture manufacturer Belform, and it is unclear when the company was founded and when or why the company ceased production. However, it is known that the Belgian designer Alfred Hendrickx (b. 1931) designed elegant, sculptural pieces for Belform throughout the midcentury. His designs included tables , seating , storage solutions , and sideboards in juxtaposing materials, often pairing nicely grained teak and rosewood with less luxurious materials such as laminates and steel. His sideboards and desks feature characteristic square metal pulls, which are often lacquered black.

Hendrickx’s other 1950s and ‘60s-era pieces have been recently rediscovered on the vintage market, sought after for their more “industrial-style” take on the midcentury Scandinavian look. Designs include the Model S5 armchair (c. 1950), Model S3 dining chair (1958), and the three-legged Sabena Lounge Chair (1958). Inspired by the streamline shape of airplanes, the chair was designed for the first-class lounge for Sabena Airlines at the Zaventem Airport in Brussels. With only 150 copies originally produced and a limited amount of copies still left in existence, the Sabena is a true rarity on the vintage market.
