It has sublimated my gaze for years, from childhood to today", José NICOLAS Publication: "CHAD 1980-1997", José Nicolas, preface Pierre Haski, Imogene editions, Paris, 2018 Exhibitions: - Chad of anonymous heroes, Union of Professional Photographers, Paris (February 1 - 27, 2022) - Chad 1980-1997, Espace Photo du Perche, Bellême (November 17, 2018 - January 13, 2019) “My connection with Chad goes back to my childhood. In the early 1960s, with my military father, we landed in Faya-Largeau, capital of northern Chad, known as Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti. An immense territory (600,350 square kilometres) for seventy thousand inhabitants. I remember a life full of sweetness, where time had no hold on us, where I fully lived this freedom with the happiness of innocence. I returned to Chad in 1978. As a paratrooper, I took part in the evacuation of European nationals during the violent fighting between the various Chadian factions – and there were many of them. Back two years later, with my unit, we nomadized for four months in the east, in Abéché, then near Lake Chad in Mao. Magical moments. I then devote myself with my camera to a pleasure of curiosity and contemplation that will never leave me. These are my first images of Chad. Other stays follow one another until the end of the 1990s. I go there as a logistician for Médecins du Monde and Hôpital sans frontières (1983), then Sipa from 1984. I cover the Libyan attack of N'Djamena in 1986 and the rout of Gaddafi's armored vehicles at the battle of Ouadi Doum in 1987. That year, I had the joy of finding Faya-Largeau who had remained as I had known him in my childhood. I photographed this desert town with intense pleasure at the risk of being forgotten by my journalist colleagues... In 1990, the world witnessed the fall of Hissène Habré and the seizure of power by Idriss Déby. Finally, in 1997, for Action Against Hunger, I traveled through the desert areas of this country, photographing, free from any professional constraints. I explore at leisure the places now forgotten by the news. If my travels have always taken me above the capital, I wanted to bring together these archive images to pay tribute to this country. »José NICOLAS
