Small 19th Century Louis XV Cherry Secretaire

Vintage Design

A small desk called ''Dos d'âne'' in solid cherry wood designed at the end of the 19th century.
It opens in the upper part by a plan with a moving edge, which is, by definition, inclined. The latter reveals an interior composed of two niches and a secret compartment in the middle. This one is dissimulated by a removable trap door then by a sliding lid. On either side, there are two rows organized in a tier. Each one includes two drawers with brass lens knobs and bare space. The flap once unfolded is held in its horizontal position by two original iron compasses. The writing space thus available is furnished with a pretty leather current Bordeaux, with central vignette, corner flowers, and gilded friezes. It should be noted that this part secretary locks since the opening is equipped with an entry cut out of brass and an iron lock, in perfect working order. This flap is also embellished in the center with a rose des vents in light and dark wood, and a frame with greek-style angles. These inlays are on a walnut background.
Underneath, this desk offers two long drawers of an equal depth of 4 cm, separated by a third illusory. All have a brass drawer knob and their fronts are embellished with diamond inlays, combining dark wood and lemon tree fillets.
This property ends with a subtly chantournée low traverse and rests on four finely curved legs.
The interiors of the drawers are in cherry wood for the sides, oak for the bottoms. The back of the furniture is in beech on the upper part, in chestnut on its lower part.
